2. Responsive Website Elements

2.1. Responsive Grids, Layout

Switch between 5 column to 1 column with a responsive grid. Take care where to place your content as when the template responses, the content in the columns moves to another position.

3.2 Content "Response" and Performance matters

Beside moving content module from left to right or top to bottom, there is a common practice for Responsive Design that some "extra" or "optional content" like ads, reference information that can be hidden in small resolution. In Elastica, for example:

The ad content of the website can be loaded in the 5th column which only "ajax" load if the screen is wider than 1280px. The code works in a way that such ad banner won't be "requested" if the media query find that screen resolution is smaller than 1280px.

What is ACTA?

Since Spring 2007, the European Union, the United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia as well as a few other countries have been secretly negotiating a trade agreement aimed at enforcing copyright and tackling counterfeited goods (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement). Specifically, leaked documents show that one of the major goal of the treaty is to force signatory countries into implementing anti file-sharing policies under the form of strong criminal sanctions.

ACTA is one more offensive against the sharing of culture on the Internet. ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is an agreement secretly negotiated by a small "club" of like-minded countries (39 countries, including the 27 of the European Union, the United States, Japan, etc). Negotiated instead of being democratically debated, ACTA bypasses parliaments and international organizations to dictate a repressive logic dictated by the entertainment industries.

At a time when important debates are taking place on the need to adapt copyright to the digital age, this treaty would bypass democratic processes in order to enforce a fundamentally irrelevant regulatory regime. It would profoundly alter the very nature of the Internet as we know it by by putting legal and monetary pressure on Internet service providers (in a most subtler way than in previous versions of the text), ACTA will give the music and movie industries a legal weapon to force them to police their networks and users themselves.

If you like your security suites to be feature-rich then Kaspersky’s offerings have always been worth a look, as most editions come packed with functionality that you won’t find elsewhere.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (KIS 2012) is a little quieter than usual, though; its release notes show no big additions this time around, just interface tweaks and various engine optimisations. So what does this mean in real life? We took a closer look.

The program started well with a hassle-free installation – we weren’t even forced to reboot – and after a click or two we got our first look at that revamped interface. This is clean and clear, displaying all the key information you need at a glance – protection status, database update details, licence validity and more – while the suite’s many functions are accessible via a scrolling toolbar.

It’s all very straightforward and unintimidating, and even PC novices will quickly be running their first scan. By default the program also launches scans when your system is idle. And you can alternatively schedule unattended scans to run whenever you like, though this is trickier to organise (we had to check the Help file to discover the secret).

However you launch the antivirus engine, you should find it does a good job of detecting and removing malware. Independent testing labs AV Comparatives recently awarded the 2011 engine their highest “Advanced +” rating, and this version had no problem finding and eliminating our test samples.

Scan speeds were less impressive, with KIS 2012 proving only average on our test PC. Resource use was reasonable, though, at around 80MB RAM and around 2% CPU utilisation when scanning, and the program had only minimal effect on our PC’s boot and application launch times, so on balance the antivirus engine gets a thumbs up from us.

Automatic protection

Setting up your preferred configuration of virus scans and settings can take a little while, but the good news is that once you’ve finished, most of the other protective features on offer here require no intervention whatsoever.

The firewall, for instance, manages to allow trustworthy programs online, and block everything else, without drowning you in annoying alerts. If you need more control then it’s possible to define exactly what your programs can do in great detail, from allowing online access to managing services, installing drivers or writing Registry keys, but there’s no need to touch any of that – the firewall works perfectly well all on its own.

Built-in browsing protection sees KIS 2012 run real-time checks on the URLs you try to visit, analysing them for malware and phishing scams. This was a weak area in the 2011 edition, but Kaspersky say the technology has been significantly improved, and sure enough our tests showed the same (though it’s still only a little more effective than using IE or Firefox alone).

Meanwhile real-time protection sees all files scanned when accessed or downloaded. An instant messaging module checks file transfers in all the main clients, and the Network Attack Blocker looks out for and blocks suspect network activity.

The antispam filter didn’t work quite as well for us, letting through around 40% of our test junk mails. It didn’t block a single legitimate message, though, which is a plus. And if you don’t mind a little manual intervention then it could really pay off here: the filter provides a host of configuration settings which allow you to fine-tune how it works.

Comprehensive

If the automated protection isn’t quite enough for you then you could always explore KIS 2012′s menus for additional functions – there are plenty on offer.

The suite’s above-average parental controls module allows you to restrict computer, application and internet use, for instance. You’re able to control web browsing, downloads, instant messaging and even social network contacts; there are options to prevent the sharing of data like addresses or phone numbers; and detailed reports keep you up-to-date with what’s going on.

Sandboxing technology allows you to run your browser, or applications in an isolated environment which prevents any malware you might encounter from infecting your real system.

KIS 2012 is also able to scan for a host of security issues, from vulnerable applications, to poorly chosen IE security options or Windows configuration settings. Sounds great, but the latter two options in particular have a problem.

The program would regularly report that something was wrong with a setting: our “service termination timeout” was “out of admissible values”, say, or our “protocol prefixes were modified”. But it never explained what the current setting was, or what it thinks the setting should be: you just have to trust it, click “Fix” and hope for the best. If you’re not so technical you’ll appreciate the simplicity, but experienced users will probably find this frustrating.

Still, there are plenty of other interesting tools to play with by way of compensation. So the network monitor provides a detailed view on what’s tying up all your network traffic; the virtual keyboard allows you to safely enter logons, credit card numbers and other sensitive data, bypassing keyloggers; the privacy cleaner clears your Windows and IE activity traces (though no other browsers, unfortunately); and an improved gadget makes it easier than ever to control all this power from your own desktop.

We noticed a few irritations here, then, but they are quickly outweighed by everything that Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 gets right. And so if you’re looking for a security suite which offers more than most of the competition then this could be a very good choice.

Sandberg, 38, was brought in to provide some adult supervision and help Silicon Valley's hottest startup to grow up—and make oodles of money. If anyone can figure out how to capitalize on Web 2.0, it's Sandberg. The Edutainer: Jon Stewart

With more people than ever turning to the Web for news and videos, The Daily Show has become the place where many claim to be getting their best coverage of the elections. She has plenty of experience building new models on top of old habits. As the Vice President and General Manager of NPR, she spearheaded the organization's wildly popular and innovative podcasting offerings. The Advocate: Anssi Vanjoki

Nokia (NOK) veteran Vanjoki is the most visible advocate for the Finnish handset maker's transition from hardware manufacturer to provider of mobile Internet services. As executive vice-president, markets, Vanjoki is responsible for convincing consumers as well as business partners that Nokia's devices are useful for much more than talking and occasionally snapping a photo. The "multimedia computers," as Vanjoki likes to call Nokia smartphones, are becoming gateways to the Internet and services such as social networking, music downloads or navigation. Nokia will need all the determination that the hard-driving Vanjoki, who hunts bear in his spare time, can muster. It's directly taking on Apple, Google, and Research in Motion.

The Crowd Sourcer: Jimmy Wales

Despite speculation that Yahoo might be interested in buying Time Warner's AOL unit, Yang is publicly banking on new services such as a display-advertising system announced on Sept. 24. But activist investor Carl Icahn and two of his cohorts on Yahoo's board, along with many other shareholders, still favor a deal with Microsoft. Meantime, regulators are scrutinizing a proposed search ad deal with Google that Yahoo says would bring in $800 million a year. So Yang's running room is short. And with the economy already slowing the growth of Yahoo's mainstay display advertising revenues, his effort to keep Yahoo independent faces steep odds.

Dikutip detikINET dari Softpedia, Jumat (12/9/2008), November mendatang, AMD akan menelurkan Athlon 2650e dan X2 3250e dual-core yang dipadukan dengan chipset 740 AMD. Athlon X2 berjalan pada kecepatan 1,5Ghz dan 1MB L2 cache. Sementara Athlon 2650e dengan kecepatan 1,6Ghz dan 512KB L2 cache.

Besar daya yang dikonsumsi prosesor ini lebih besar daripada Intel Atom versi 2 Watt (Silverthorne core) dan versi 4 Watt (Diamondville core), yakni Athlon X2 mengkonsumsi daya sebesar 22 Watt, sedangkan 2650e sebesar 15 Watt.

Namun, sepertinya AMD tidak akan bermain di pasar netbook seperti halnya Intel. AMD justru lebih memilih untuk berkonsentrasi di pasar nettop, komputer desktop murah yang berbentuk mini. Walhasil, Intel akan semakin berjaya di pasar netbook, mengingat pesaing di ranah ini hanya ada VIA.

Diprediksikan harga dari chip baru AMD tersebut berkisar antara US$40-US$50. Sementara Diamondville dari Intel dipatok pada harga US$23 dan US$44, dengan biaya produksi US$6.

Mozilla Readies Firefox 3.1 Features

Mozilla Corp. will use a several-week delay it recently added to the Firefox 3.1 schedule to build a private browsing mode and beef up the browser's address bar, the company said today. Three weeks ago, the company said it would insert four to five more weeks into the timetable, part of a reaction to changes in the browser market, including the introduction by Google Inc. of its Chrome browser. Then, Mozilla said it would probably use the time to add a privacy mode and to punch up its TraceMonkey JavaScript engine performance.

A private browsing mode and fast JavaScript execution were touted by Google last month when it launched Chrome.
In meeting notes published on its Web site today, Mozilla said it planned to add the privacy feature in Beta 2 , which would likely be released in November according to Mozilla's current schedule.
Dubbed "porn mode" by some, privacy tools limit or entirely eliminate what the browser records as it travels the Internet. Typically, URLs are not recorded in the history, cookies are not saved and other evidence is purged from the computer at the end of the session. Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer 8, Chrome, and Apple Inc.'s Safari all have private browsing built in.
Also set for debut in Firefox 3.1 Beta 2: changes to the already-available "Clear Private Data" tool that would let users select time and data ranges for retroactively erasing their browsing tracks, changes to the address bar to add privacy-related tagging and tab search, and a restoration of the plug-in installation process used in Firefox 2.0.
Already slated to appear in Beta 1, Mozilla said today, were support for the video HTML tag, tab bar tweaks, and the ability to drag a tab to the desktop to open a new browsing window.
Mozilla is also mulling over several other additions to Firefox 3.1, but has not committed to working them into the release. The most prominent would be an Opera-esque "Speed Dial" feature that would show user-selected or most-recent sites as thumbnails when the user opened a new tab. Google's Chrome sports a similar tool.
The developer who has taken charge of the proposed Firefox feature cited a pair of existing add-ons, Speed Dial and Fast Dial , as examples of what he was considering.
Mozilla made it clear, however, that those last-wave changes would not have priority. "We're also considering reviewed, solid, tested patches for some other small improvements but we will not hold Beta 2 for these," the meeting notes said.
Beta 1 is on track for release next week, while Beta 2 will be locked down Nov. 4 and released several weeks after that, Mozilla said. It has not committed to a ship date for Firefox 3.1, but has said it will shoot for a late-2008 or early-2009 release.

Microsoft Pamerkan Fitur Utama Visual Studio 2010

Meski belum dipastikan kapan akan diluncurkan, Microsoft mengungkapkan secara detil fitur-fitur terbaru dalam software terbarunya, Visual Studio 2010. Generasi terbaru software yang menyediakan platform pengembangan aplikasi tersebut akan diperkuat di sisi kemudahan untuk mengembangkan aplikasi.

Dua fitur utama software penerus Visual Studio 2008 tersebut adalah modelling dan testing. Visual Studio 2010 juga menyediakan fitur yang membuat pengembang aplikasi, arsitek software, dan tester untuk bekerja sama lebih mudah melalui Visual Studio Team System 2010 yang sebelumnya disebut dengan kode Rosario.

"Saat pengembang menulis kode, secara otomatis terlihat unit mana yang harus dites untuk melakukan validasi terhadap kode tersebut. Tool lainnta akan menunjukkan secara rinci informasi bug yang ada di dalam kode jika tes gagal," ujar Dave Mandlen, direktur marketing untuk developer tools Microsoft. Ia mengatakan, hal ini penting, karena para pengembang sering menolak melakukan testing secara reguler saat menulis kode karena menghbaiskan waktu atau sulit untuk menentukan bagian tertentu yang harus dites.

Pada Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft juga memperkenalkan fitur baru yang fungisnya menyerupai kotak hitam pesawat. Saat tes dilakukan, setiap keadaan akan direkam. Dengan demikian, tester dapat melihat jejak (log) sepanjang pengujian sehingga dapat melacak bug dan setiap layer kesalahan.

Visual Studio Team System 2010 akan dilengkapi stategi pemodelan yang disebut Oslo yang pernah diungkapkan pertama kali pada konferensi TechEd awal tahun ini. Fitur Architecture Explorer akan menyediakan diagram proses pembuatan aplikasi yang mendukung UML (Unified Modeling Language) dan sejenisnya.

Elgan: The '$100 laptop' May Be A Glimpse of The Future

No, not the price, unfortunately. I'm talking about the new all-screen clamshell.

You've no doubt heard of the "$100 laptop" project. The idea is to help poor kids around the world by providing them with simple, durable, usable and wireless laptops for downloading and using textbooks and educational software, playing games and communicating.

The first iteration, the XO 1.0 -- a.k.a. the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) laptop -- looks like a toy for baby aliens (fluorescent green with two antennas). Besides a few innovations, including mesh networking and a water-resistant rubberized keyboard, the laptop is largely comparable to today's ordinary low-cost laptops.

A prototype of the next version was unveiled last month, and it looks a lot like the laptop you're going to buy in five years. No, I'm not kidding. Your laptop will look and function more or less like the XO 2.0. It's a brilliant -- and prescient -- design.

The most conspicuous and best feature is that the bottom half of the clamshell is a screen, just like the top half. Here's what it looks like.

I've talked to a lot of readers and other users who say they'll never give up the tactile feedback of a real keyboard and many who don't want to let go of the mouse, either. But I believe most users will be willing to sacrifice both keyboard and mouse in order to take advantage of the all-screen laptop of the future.

The XO 2.0 clamshell form factor works in four ways (compared to just one with conventional laptops).

Tablet mode. By opening the clamshell all the way, the two screens snap together in the middle to form one semicontinuous touch screen.
Laptop mode. By laying the bottom flat and setting the top half at an angle, the bottom becomes the keyboard and touchpad, and the top functions as the screen, just like a conventional laptop, but the keyboard is on-screen and virtual.
Book mode. When you the hold up the XO 2.0 like a book, the text can be displayed on two "pages," which can be "turned" virtually.
Two-person mode. By setting the laptop open and flat like "tablet mode," but pressing an on-screen button, one screen orients up and the other down. If you set it on a table between two people, they both get their own properly oriented touch screen, which is great for games or any other two-person usage applications.

With today's desktops, software and usage models, the two-screen clamshell design of the XO 2.0 laptop may not appeal. But in five years, I believe everyone will intuitively understand why this is the best possible way to design a mobile computer because of four current trends and where they're taking us.

Kena Sweeping Windows Bajakan? Pahami Prosedurnya...

Yang paling ditakutkan oleh para pengusaha warnet adalah apalagi kalau bukan yang namanya sweeping software bajakan. Namun dalam perkembangannya sweeping yang dilakukan sudah mengarah pada 'mencari-cari' kesalahan. Bisa jadi software-nya asli, tapi ternyata menyimpan mp3 bajakan. Kena deh...Padahal kalau kita mau lebih 'kendhel', kita punya hak untuk mempertahankan komputer kita bila disita oleh polisi. Hal itu dikarenakan proses pembuktian keterlibatan seseorang dalam tindakan kriminal yang menggunakan komputer membutuhkan waktu yang lama, termasuk melakukan pengintaian. Jadi, apabila ada polisi yang berani masuk ke dalam warnet dan menyatakan harus menyita semua komputer yang ada berarti mereka adalah oknum yang tidak bertanggung jawab.

Berikut saya kutip prosedurnya dari milis di tempat saya yang di-post dari Joseph Adi (yosprofec@gmail.com), di mana pernyataan di bawah ini diperoleh langsung dari pihak Microsoft Indonesia dan juga melalui perwakilannya, yaitu Magenta Sebagai tempat pendaftaran MSRA:

Pertama, akan ada perwakilan dari pihak yang merasa berkepentingan (misalnya Microsoft) yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Surveyor datang melakukan survei, bukan razia penyitaan!. Mereka wajib menunjukkan surat perintah kerja (SPK) yang berisikan detail apa saja yang harus mereka kerjakan. User berhak melakukan konfirmasi dengan cara menelepon pihak Microsoft Indonesia atau Magenta tentang keberadaan surveyor di lapangan tersebut.

Kedua, apabila surveyor mendapatkan penggunaan software bajakan, maka surveyor tersebut berhak meminta surat pernyataan dari user yang wajib diisi data sesuai dengan keadaan di lapangan oleh user.

Ketiga, pihak Microsoft/ Magenta akan mengirim surat penawaran untuk menyelesaikan tindakan pelanggaran oleh user. Setelah user mengkonfirmasi tindakan yang telah diambil apakah memutuskan untuk menggunakan Windows original atau beralih ke solusi freeware seperti Linux, pihak Microsoft/Magenta akan mengirimkan kembali seorang surveyor memastikan kebenaran di lapangan.

Keempat, apabila user tidak merespon penawaran dan atau setelah surveyor mendatangi kembali masih mendapatkan pelanggaran, maka pihak Microsoft/Magenta akan mengirimkan surat peringatan.

Kelima, apabila user tidak merespon surat peringatan, maka pihak Microsoft / Magenta akan perkarakan secara hukum dan menyerahkannya ke pihak Polri.

Selanjutnya sepoerti proses hukum yang berlaku, Polri akan mengirimkan surat panggilan pertama, kedua,ketiga dan apabila tidak direspon baru akan dilakukan penyitaan dan penyegelan tempat usaha.

Catatan:

Di luar proses/prosedur di atas, user berhak mempertahankan kepemilikannya atas harta benda yang dibeli secara legal dan sebagai pembeli dapat memposisikan dirinya sebagai korban. Tidak bisa suatu merek memperkarakan merek lain, misalnya Microsoft memeperkarakan Biling Explorer bajakan. Hal tersebut merupakan etika merek dagang terdaftar (registered trade mark) internasional.

Informasi ini dapat diperoleh melalui webside Microsoft atau apabila kita mencoba mengaktivasi/ update windows bajakan. Semoga informasi ini bisa berguna, dan kalau tidak mampu beli Windows, ya beralihlah ke open source software, toh sekarang OS ini tidak kalah dengan Windows...

32 vs 64 bit

A change from a 32-bit to a 64-bit architecture is a fundamental alteration, as most operating systems must be extensively modified to take advantage of the new architecture. Other software must also be ported to use the new capabilities; older software is usually supported through either a hardware compatibility mode (in which the new processors support the older 32-bit version of the instruction set as well as the 64-bit version), through software emulation, or by the actual implementation of a 32-bit processor core within the 64-bit processor (as with the Itanium processors from Intel, which include an x86 processor core to run 32-bit x86 applications). The operating systems for those 64-bit architectures generally support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.

64-bit processors calculate particular tasks (such as factorials of large figures) twice as fast as working in 32-bit environments (given example is derived from comparison between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Calculator; noticeable for factorial of say 100 000). This gives a general feeling of theoretical possibilities of 64-bit optimized applications.

One significant exception to this is the AS/400, whose software runs on a virtual ISA, called TIMI (Technology Independent Machine Interface) which is translated to native machine code by low-level software before being executed. The low-level software is all that has to be rewritten to move the entire OS and all software to a new platform, such as when IBM transitioned their line from the older 32/48-bit "IMPI" instruction set to 64-bit PowerPC (IMPI wasn't anything like 32-bit PowerPC, so this was an even bigger transition than from a 32-bit version of an instruction set to a 64-bit version of the same instruction set).

While 64-bit architectures indisputably make working with large data sets in applications such as digital video, scientific computing, and large databases easier, there has been considerable debate as to whether they or their 32-bit compatibility modes will be faster than comparably-priced 32-bit systems for other tasks. In x86-64 architecture (AMD64), the majority of the 32-bit operating systems and applications are able to run smoothly on the 64-bit hardware.

Sun's 64-bit Java virtual machines are slower to start up than their 32-bit virtual machines because Sun has only implemented the "server" JIT compiler (C2) for 64-bit platforms.^[9] The "client" JIT compiler (C1), which produces less efficient code but compiles much faster, is unavailable on 64-bit platforms.

It should be noted that speed is not the only factor to consider in a comparison of 32-bit and 64-bit processors. Applications such as multi-tasking, stress testing, and clustering (for high-performance computing), HPC, may be more suited to a 64-bit architecture given the correct deployment. 64-bit clusters have been widely deployed in large organizations such as IBM, HP and Microsoft, for this reason.

"Da..! wak masang LAN di rumah pi baa kok ndak nyambuang nyo baduo doh Da...?"

Seorang temen datang ke Rental malam hari, bingung kek nya... baru beli kabel LAN tapi kok ga nyambung, trus saya nanya ke dia, "Susunan ujung kabelnya pada sama ga", eee.. dia malah nyengir bilang,"Ga tau Da... yang masangin orang toko nya"... yahh..
Wal hasil saya akhirnya dengan berat hati ngomong, "Udah lo bawa aja sini...!"
Sambil nungguin dia pulang ngambil si Kabel, saya coba nanya ma om google kira-kira gimana siy cara masang kabel LAN yang bener? Si Om tanpa pikir panjang langsung nyodorin beberapa link dan setelah kali..klik..dan klik akhirnya nyampe ke martabaktelormacan.net bertepatan dengan kedatangan kembali sang pahlawan LAN sambil nyengir ringan agak pucat berusaha ngebuka lilitan kabel di lehernya. Dan setelah diteliti dengan secara seksama ternyata bener susunan ujung kabelnya mempunyai warna yang sama....! ehhh.. dia nyengir lagi... dari pada bersusah payah nerangin ke dia saya minta dia baca sendiri yang tampil di monitor, isinya kira2 seperti ini:

Penggunaan jenis kabel
> Kabel Cat 5 biasa digunakan untuk menghubungkan antara hub/router/switch ke PC karena koneksi ini tidak memakai traffic data yang besar sehingga 10 MBps sudah cukup.
Sedangkan Cat 6 digunakan untuk menghubungkan antar hub/router/switch karena hubungan ini biasanya melibatkan banyak PC sehingga traffic data akan menjadi lebih besar pula.
Analoginya seperti jalan, cat 6 diibaratkan jalan raya (4 jalur), sedangkan cat 5 seperti jalan biasa (2 jalur).
Bila ingin menggunakan Cat 6 untuk semua koneksi boleh2 saja, tapi akan agak mubazir jadinya.
Sedangkan kalau ingin hemat dan menggunakan Cat 5 semua, jangan kaget kalau koneksi jadi lambat…
>Sedangkan yang membedakan kapan menggunakan kabel straight dan kapan menggunakan kabel cross adalah mesin apa yang ingin kita hubungkan. Bila PC ke router gunakan kabel straight, kalau PC ke PC gunakan kabel cross.

Langkah pembuatan:
1. Kupas bungkus kabel, akan terlihat 8 kabel kecil warna-warni, cukup, ga usah dikupas lagi sampai terlihat kabel tembaganya (untuk ngupas bisa pakai crimping tool atau gunting/silet/cutter,dkk)
2. urutkan kabel sesuai urutan yang diinginkan, T568A atau T568B
3. tempelkan kabel2 sesuai urutan secara mendatar (pegang aja pake tangan, bukan di lem/solatip)

4. potong sekaligus dengan crimping tool hingga ujung2 kabel segaris
5. masukkan ujung2 kabel kedalam RJ-45
6. dorong2 kabel masuk RJ45 sampai terasa benar2 masuk/mentok

7. gunakan crimping tool untuk memasang RJ-45: cari lobang di cripting tool yang pas untuk kepala RJ-45, masukkan RJ-45(yang sudah dimasuki kabel) kedalam lobang itu, tekan cripting tool sampai terdengar “klik”

8. lakukan langkah 1-7 untuk ujung satunya lagi

9. test kabel dengan cable tester: masukkan kabel ke cable tester, nyalakan, kalau kedelapan lampu kecil bisa menyala (gantian nyalanya) berarti kabel sudah tersambung dengan baik

Akhirnya setelah dia baca atas bawah.. atas lagi ... bawah lagi.. nahh atas lagi...bawah lagi kek nya...(hampir 15 menit) sambil angguk2 geleng2.. dia praktek potong kabel, susun yang rapi, masukin ke jack, ... eh salah warna.. ngulang lagi.... (+30 menit) bergema teriakan YEEEESSSSS....!.... lampu di tester nyala... hhhhhhhh...

Caranya : masuk ke comand prompt. Anda bisa klik Run-cmd-dan ketikkan ping Nama situs yang ingin dilacak lalu tekan enter. Setelah anda tekan enter, maka akan tertera alamat IP situs tersebut.

2.Melacak lokasi server (real address)

Setelah anda mendapatkan IP address situs tersebut. Anda pun bisa mengetahui di mana lokasi negara dan kota situs tersebut berada. Caranya buka www.domainwhitepages.com.Lalu masukkan IP address situs tersebut atau alamat situs tersebut. Anda pun akan mendapatkan informasi lengkap tentang lokasi situs tersebut.

Setelah anda membaca 2 trik di atas, kita bisa menggabungkan 2 trik tersebut untuk Melacak IP address Lawan chatting. Flash dan XP Tidak Kompak

Microsoft dan Adobe ternyata tidak sinkron. Flash-Player dengan versi 9.0.115.0 memungkinkan penyerang untuk menyusupkan kode perusak ke dalam Windows. Ini dapat dilakukan hanya dengan membuka sebuah situs dengan fitur Flash yang diaktifkan.

Menurut Symantec, kasus ini terjadi pada lebih dari 20.000 website. Sejak awal April lalu, Adobe telah merilis sebuah security patch. Dengan versi 9.0.124.0, sistem Windows sekarang tidak dapat dijebol lagi. Security measure yang telah disempurnakan juga menyebabkan beberapa file kurang berfungsi dengan baik.

Memang setelah update tersedia, namun risiko ternyata tetap berlanjut. XP Service Pack 3 malah mengembalikan versi Flash yang lama ke dalam sistem. Walaupun Adobe telah menutup lubang keamanan tersebut sebelum Release-Day, Microsoft masih mengintegrasikan versi yang berisiko ke dalam SP3. Sekarang, Microsoft telah merespons dan menawarkan sebuah patch. Pengguna Flash sebaiknya mengaktualkan sistem Windows dan memeriksa versi Player ini. Versi Flash 9.0.115.0 membuka sebuah gerbang bagi hacker.

Kalau saja ada alien berteknologi maju dari luar angkasa bertamu ke bumi dan diberikan pilihan untuk menggunakan komputer dan operating system (OS) apa saja, OS apa yang akan dipilihnya?

SEBELUM memikirkan jawaban pertanyaan di atas, mungkin timbul pertanyaan kenapa contoh penggunanya adalah alien? Apakah penulis tidak menemukan contoh manusia yang sanggup mengoperasikan segala macam OS?

Bukan begitu, tetapi kebanyakan orang cenderung telah memiliki preferensi tertentu pada suatu OS, sebelum mencoba dan mengetahui seluk-beluk OS lainnya.

Contohnya, si A (bukan alien, mungkin Amat, Andy, Abu, dan seterusnya) tidak akan ragu-ragu memilih Fedora Linux sebagai OS karena baru kemarin sore menjadi korban sweeping software bajakan dan kebetulan baru membeli buku panduan Fedora.

Sementara si B dengan meyakinkan akan memilih komputer Mac dengan OS Mac OS X setelah menyaksikan promosi ketangguhan dan kemulusan graﬁ k OS buatan Apple Inc tersebut.

Si C mungkin akan mengambil CD Windows XP dan melakukan instalasi pada sebuah PC rakitan dengan kecepatan luar biasa karena nomor serial product key Windows XP telah tertanam dengan baik pada ingatannya.

Artikel ini mengajak Anda sejenak menjadi alien yang belum pernah mengalami kejadian-kejadian serupa atau belum memiliki preferensi tertentu, dan mencoba melihat secara umum fungsi dasar OS, penggunaan, dan pilihan-pilihan OS yang tersedia.

Awal Mula

Jika kita melakukan kilas balik sejarah OS, kita perlu mundur kurang lebih 50 tahun yang lalu.

Apakah ada OS, maka kemudian ada mesin komputer? Ternyata tidak, sebuah mesin dapat berjalan tanpa adanya OS, sebuah program dapat langsung dijalankan pada sebuah mesin. Setidaknya itu cara kerja yang banyak terdapat pada jaman mulai dikembangkannya komputer sekitar tahun 1950 (yang juga disebut dengan abstraksi hardware).

Tidak perlu susah-susah membayangkannya, contoh sederhana adalah CMOS Setup, yang merupakan program yang berjalan tanpa memerlukan OS.

Kemudian IBM mulai memperkenalkan komputer mainframe dengan OS OS/360 pada masa tahun 1960-an. Diikuti dengan Unix yang dikembangkan pada tahun 1969 oleh sebuah grup karyawan dari AT&T.

Lompatan besar ditandai dengan OS PC-DOS dan MS-DOS oleh IBM dan Microsoft, seiring dengan penggunaan komputer desktop yang semakin luas.

Menambah panasnya kompetisi, Apple Macintosh (sekarang Apple Inc) mengeluarkan Mac OS. Sementara OS Unix melahirkan pengembangan-pengembangan baru, terutama pada tahun 1991 ketika Linus Torvalds memperkenalkan Linux. Microsoft sendiri secara konsisten terus mengeluarkan OS berbasis Windows, dengan produk-produk fenomenal seperti Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP, dan seterusnya. Hingga akhirnya, hari ini Anda mendapatkan pilihan OS yang cukup beragam, dan pilihan-pilihan tersebut bisa jadi semakin bertambah pada masa yang akan datang.

Operating System

OS merupakan software yang tidak sekedar software, karena OS menjadi ibu software-software lain yang berjalan di dalamnya. Singkatnya OS membentuk suatu platform agar aplikasi-aplikasi dapat berjalan di atasnya.

Tugas OS adalah mengelola resource, secara umum terbagi atas:

1.Pengelolaan Proses.

Setiap program yang berjalan di dalam komputer (baik berupa service atau aplikasi) merupakan suatu proses. OS mengelola eksekusi proses-proses yang terjadi secara multitasking.

2.Pengelolaan Memory.

Secara hirarkis, pemrosesan tercepat pada sistem komputer dilakukan di register, lalu CPU cache, Random Access Memory (RAM), dan terakhir adalah pada disk storage. Semuanya merupakan jenis memory yang harus dikelola OS. Perhatikan bahwa disk storage juga merupakan salah satu jenis memory, karena dapat digunakan sebagai virtual memory yang menangani proses-proses yang berjalan.

3.Disk dan Sistem File.

Pengelolaan ﬁle dan directory di dalam disk drive termasuk salah satu tugas penting OS. Pada OS keluarga Unix, penamaan ﬁle dan directory adalah case sensitive atau membedakan penggunaan huruf besar dan kecil, contohnya nama ﬁle surat.txt dan Surat.Txt dalam satu directory diperkenankan, dan merupakan dua ﬁ le yang berbeda.

Hal ini tidak diperkenankan dalam OS Windows, di mana penamaan ﬁle dan directory adalah case insensitive, Windows juga tidak memperbolehkan serangkaian karakter tertentu untuk penamaan ﬁ le dan directory, mi salnya seperti karakter “?”, “*”, “<”. “>”, dan seterusnya.

Perbedaan ini cukup mendasar untuk dipahami saat Anda menggunakan OS yang berbeda dari sebelumnya, misalnya saat Anda mengganti OS yang digunakan oleh web server dan melakukan migrasi ﬁle, pastikan ﬁle-ﬁle yang digunakan telah kompatibel dan sesuai dengan OS yang baru. Jika tidak, maka Anda harus melakukan penyesuaian nama ﬁle. Sistem ﬁle (ﬁle system) merupakan salah satu perbedaan yang juga mendasar pada sistem operasi yang tersedia, sistem ﬁle merupakan sebuah metode untuk menyimpan dan mengorganisasi ﬁle agar dapat diakses de ngan mudah.

Contoh sistem ﬁle yang popular adalah NTFS yang merupakan sistem ﬁle standar untuk Windows NT, termasuk versi-versi Windows di atasnya seperti Windows 2000, Windows XP, hingga Windows Vista.

Contoh lainnya adalah ext2 dan ext3, yang merupakan sistem ﬁle untuk kernel Linux. Kebanyakan distribusi Linux mendukung sistem ﬁle ext2, ext3, ReiserFS, GFS, NILFS, FAT, XFS, JFS, NTFS, dan lain sebagainya. Mac OS X mendukung HFS+ sebagai sistem ﬁle utamanya. HFS+ merupakan pengembangan dari Hierarchical File System dari MAC OS versi awal. Mac OS X memiliki fasilitas untuk membaca dan menulis dalam sistem ﬁle lain seperti FAT, NTFS, dan lain-lain.

4.Jaringan.

Pada awal dikenalnya PC masalah jaringan bukanlah hal penting, tetapi saat ini sebuah komputer rasanya tidak lengkap tanpa adanya network card yang terpasang, ditambah lagi dengan penggunaan jaringan wireless yang praktis dan semakin banyak digunakan. Karena itu sebuah OS dewasa ini harus mampu menangani jaringan dengan dukungan berbagai macam protokol jarringan yang tersedia, terutama protokol TCP/IP yang saat ini paling banyak digunakan.

Dengan adanya jaringan juga memungkinkan komputer yang walaupun berbeda OS dapat berkomunikasi satu sama lain dan melakukan sharing resource.

5. Security.

Erat kaitannya dengan jaringan, maka security juga merupakan hal penting yang harus dimiliki OS. Hal ini diakibatkan karena dengan adanya jaringan semakin mempermudah proses komunikasi dan distribusi ﬁle antarkomputer.

Dapat diibaratkan dengan adanya jaringan, maka komputer Anda seperti rumah dengan pintu dan jendela yang terbuka agar tamu dapat masuk berkunjung. Dalam keadaan seperti itu, perlu dijaga dari sisi keamanan agar tidak kedatangan tamu tak diundang, misalnya dengan memasang kawat nyamuk untuk mencegah nyamuk masuk. Implementasi “kawat nyamuk” ini di dalam OS dapat berupa otentiﬁ kasi user, hak akses resource, penanganan port, dan ﬁrewall. Salah satu pendapat yang keliru menyangkut masalah security adalah kekebalan OS terhadap virus, jika saat ini mayoritas virus menyerang OS Windows, tidak berarti OS lain tidak dapat terkena virus.

Pada prinsipnya, virus sama dengan software biasa, karena itu jika virus diciptakan sesuai dengan target OS tertentu, maka jadilah virus tersebut sebuah aplikasi yang berjalan pada OS yang dituju, entah OS tersebut adalah Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, ataupun OS lainnya.

Lalu me ngapa virus lebih banyak menyerang OS Windows? Hal ini tidak lepas dari market OS pada komputer desktop yang saat ini didominasi Windows, tetapi juga tidak dapat dipungkiri sistem operasi seperti Unix/Linux memiliki environment yang relatif lebih susah ditembus oleh virus, walau tidak berarti dijamin bebas virus.

6.Graﬁk.

Bagi banyak pengguna komputer, Graphical User Interface (GUI) menjadi daya tarik tersendiri. Hal ini tidak mengherankan karena GUI merupakan media interaksi antara manusia dan komputer, analoginya sebagaimana binatang peliharaan yang ramah tentu lebih disukai ketimbang binatang peliharaan yang penampilan luarnya tidak bersahabat. Momok tidak bersahabat juga pernah dialami OS Unix/Linux dan keluarganya terutama jika dibandingkan dengan OS Windows, tampilan Unix/Linux dirasakan kurang bersahabat bagi end user pada masa lalu, tetapi saat ini kebanyakan distro Linux telah memiliki GUI memikat. Mac OS X sendiri telah membuat terobosan besar pada tahun 2001 dengan perubahan inovatif dan dramatis pada GUI dari Mac OS ke Mac OS X.

7. Device Driver.

OS boleh berbeda, tetapi hardware yang digunakan bisa jadi sama. Agar hardware tersebut dapat dikenali pada OS, diperlukan device driver. Jadi device driver merupakan software agar sistem dapat berinteraksi dengan hardware, tidak semua device driver disediakan oleh OS, tetapi device driver umumnya disediakan oleh vendor hardware yang digunakan.

Kernel

Istilah kernel sering digunakan pada OS Unix/Linux dan keluarganya, tetapi sebenarnya kernel digunakan dan terdapat dalam setiap OS. Apa yang disebut kernel itu sendiri merupakan komponen pusat yang menghubungkan antara software aplikasi dan hardware komputer. Di dalam OS, kernel merupakan core atau intinya. Secara arsitektur desain, kernel dibagi atas:

1.Monolithic Kernel.

Mengintegrasikan banyak fungsi di dalam kernel serta menyediakan lapisan abstraksi hardware secara penuh.

2.Microkernel.

Menyediakan sedikit fungsi dari abstraksi hardware dan menggunakan aplikasi yang berjalan di atasnya (server) untuk melakukan beberapa fungsi lainnya.

3.Hybrid Kernel.

Microkernel yang dimodiﬁ kasi, dengan tambahan fungsi-fungsi untuk meningkatkan performa.

4.Exokernel.

Menyediakan abstraksi hardware secara minimal, sehingga program dapat mengakses hardware secara langsung.

Windows

Keluarga OS Microsoft Windows merupakan OS yang popular untuk komputer desktop, dan juga dapat digunakan sebagai server, seperti web server ataupun database server. Kelahiran Windows diawali dengan OS MS-DOS, jika Anda termasuk orang yang dulu sering menenteng disket berukuran 5,25 inch tentu pernah mengalami masa-masa membawa OS MS-DOS di dalam sebuah disket. Windows sendiri pada awalnya bukan merupakan OS, Windows versi 1.0, versi 2.x, dan versi 3.x, merupakan software 16 bit tambahan yang berjalan di atas OS MS-DOS atau variannya.

Versi selanjutnya Windows seperti Windows NT mulai merupakan OS secara penuh yang tidak tergantung lagi pada sistem operasi MS-DOS.

Dengan berbasis kernel Windows NT inilah, Windows terus dikembangkan menghasilkan Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, dan Windows versi yang akan datang yang saat ini disebut dengan Windows 7.

Unix/Linux

OS keluarga Unix/Linux popular digunakan sebagai server dalam dunia bisnis, dan sebagai workstation dalam dunia pendidikan dan lingkungan engineering. Untuk penggunaan sebagai komputer desktop, OS Linux popular di kalangan developer dan beberapa komunitas. Beberapa varian Unix lainnya didesain berjalan hanya pada hardware vendor tersebut seperti AIX yang berjalan pada mesin IBM, dan HP-UX yang berjalan pada mesin Hewlett Packard. Varian lainnya seperti Solaris, dapat berjalan pada beragam jenis hardware, termasuk x86 dan PC. Tersedia beragam distribusi (atau sering disebut distro) Linux, yang merupakan keluarga Unix. Beberapa pilihan distro adalah Red Hat, SuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Knoppix, dan lain sebagainya. Beberapa distro merupakan turunan dari distro lain. Mac OS X Dikeluarkan oleh Apple Inc, Mac OS X v10.5 dikenal dengan nama Leopard. Awalnya dikenal dengan nama Mac OS (tanpa X) yang diperkenalkan kali pertama pada tahun 2001. Karakter “X” sendiri berarti angka 10 dalam penomoran Romawi, yang dimaksudkan sebagai generasi penerus Mac OS versi sebelumnya yang dikenal dengan Mac OS 8 dan Mac OS 9. Tetapi, juga bukan kebetulan kalau Mac OS sebenarnya berbasis Unix karena menggunakan kernel BSD. Hal yang popular dalam Mac OS adalah tampilan GUI yang memikat, OS ini sendiri hanya diperuntukkan berjalan pada komputer Macintosh.

Embedded System

Jenis OS lainnya adalah embedded system, yaitu sistem komputer yang didesain secara khusus untuk keperluan tertentu. Pada embedded system yang sederhana, tidak ada perbe-daan antara sistem operasi dan aplikasi. Sebuah contoh embedded system adalah perangkat keras router, yang dilengkapi dengan elemen-elemen seperti micro-processor, RAM, dan ﬂash memory di dalamnya.

Lain-Lain

Jenis OS lainnya adalah Novell Netware, sebenarnya Novell bukanlah 100 persen sebuah OS, karena Novell berjalan di atas OS Novell DOS (mirip dengan MS-DOS atau PC-DOS). OS lainnya yang masih digunakan dalam skala kecil adalah OS/2 dari IBM. Perkembangan OS terus berlanjut hingga saat ini, sebuah proyek dari Microsoft Research adalah mengembangkan OS dengan kemampuan memory protection, OS ini dinamakan Singularity. Dari keluarga Unix/Linux, sedang didesain GNU Hurd dengan arsitektur microkernel.

Pilih yang Mana?

OS sebagai sebuah bisnis software yang paling vital bagi pengguna komputer saat ini tidak pelak lagi merupakan sebuah bisnis dengan persaingan yang ketat. Kita kembali pada permasalahan di awal artikel, yaitu OS apa yang paling cocok untuk diinstal, dengan adanya berbagai pilihan OS dan ketatnya kompetisi? Permasalahan OS memang tidak terbatas menginstal dan mengganti OS, kecuali jika memang sudah menjadi tujuan Anda melakukan riset OS atau sekadar hobi. Tetapi untuk penggunaan jangka panjang, harus ada sederet pertimbangan penting dan krusial yang harus dipikirkan. Beberapa pertimbangan antara lain adalah:

1.Kegunaan.

Kita akan mengambil sebuah contoh sederhana, seorang mahasiswa memutuskan untuk membeli komputer agar dapat berlatih dan mengerjakan tugas-tugas kuliah. Dalam hal ini, kegunaan atau fungsi komputer dan OS untuk mahasiswa tersebut tentunya harus disesuaikan dengan lingkungan kampus. Kegunaan yang berbeda mungkin akan terjadi jika seseorang bergerak di bidang desain dan graﬁk memutuskan membeli komputer, barang kali akan dibutuhkan GUI yang memikat. Sementara jika Anda membutuhkan seperangkat komputer dan OS dengan tingkat security yang tinggi seperti pembangunan web server, maka Anda akan fokus dengan hal-hal yang terkait dengan keamanan, patch, dan ancaman-ancaman dari luar.

2.Biaya.

Kegunaan harus juga disesuaikan dengan biaya atau budget yang tersedia. Biaya tidak hanya diperhitungkan dalam jangka pendek seperti pembelian hardware dan software, tetapi juga untuk jangka panjang. Misalnya berapa biaya perawatan, pergantian, upgrade, training jika diperlukan, dan lain sebagainya.

3.Pengguna.

Siapapun yang menggunakan OS dan komputer, pada awalnya selalu memerlukan proses belajar. Mungkin bukan suatu permasalahan jika penggunanya hanya satu atau beberapa orang, tetapi bayangkan sebuah kantor dengan ratusan karyawan tiba-tiba harus menggunakan OS dan aplikas yang baru. Adaptasi pengguna menimbulkan permasalahanwaktu yang digunakan untuk proses belajar dan adaptasi, tidak sebatas menggunakan, tetapi juga bagaimana menangani permasalahan-permasalahan yang dapat terjadi padalingkungan OS yang baru.

4.Dukungan.

Bagi vendor dan pengembang OS, dukungan merupakan tugas vital yang perlu dipertahankan agar pengguna tetap merasa terjamin untuk terus menggunakan OS. Dukungan juga diperlukan dari pengembang-pengembang software, software dengan dukungan berbagai OS tentu memilik pangsa pasar yang lebih luas. Jelaslah bahwa memilih OS yang baru, entah dengan maksud membangun sistem dari awal ataupun migrasi, bukanlah ha mudah terutama untuk skala yang cukup besar. Tetapi dengan memahami OS dan pilihan-pilihannya, Anda telah memiliki dasar yang kuat untuk menentukan OS yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan Anda. Ada juga kalanya Anda memutuskan harus menggunakan dua atau lebih OS, pemecahannya bisa dengan menggunakan dua atau lebih unit komputer, ataupun menginstal dua atau lebih OS di dalam satu mesin komputer. Salah satu penyedia virtualization software adalah Vmware, yang mengizinkan Anda menginstal dan menjalankan berbagai OS pada satu ﬁsik mesin komputer yang sama.

Tentu saja terdapat konsekuensi yang harus dibayar untuk mewujudkan hal tersebut, misalnya spesiﬁkasi hardware yang relatif tinggi, dan kenyamanan Anda dalam menggunakan berbagai OS di dalam komputer yang sama.

Penutup

Di balik kelebihan dan kekurangan suatu OS, terdapat hal yang tidak kalah pentingnya, yaitu bagaimana cara kita menggunakan OS tersebut secara optimal sesuai dengan kebutuhan kita. OS telah dilengkapi dengan berbagai opsi yang memberikan keleluasaan pengguna untuk melakukan peng aturan lebih lanjut, sehingga bisa saja terjadi di mana dua orang menggunakanOS dan spesiﬁkasi hardware yang sama, tetapi salah satunya dapat dimanfaatkan secara lebih optimal sehingga lebih baik dari sisi performa dan security. Tentu patut disayangkan jika sebuah OS hadir dengan ﬁtur dan fungsi yang memadai tetapi tidak dapat dimanfaatkan dengan optimal.
